Iconic Leonard’s Bakery Introduces New Malasada Flavors for Summer 2026
Leonard’s Bakery, the Kapahulu institution that has been serving Honolulu’s beloved malasadas since 1952, is rolling out three new seasonal flavors this summer that promise to capture the essence of island living in each bite.
The iconic bakery announced Tuesday that its summer 2026 lineup will feature Lilikoi Passion, Coconut Haupia Cream, and Guava Cheesecake malasadas, available starting June 1 through Labor Day weekend. The new offerings join Leonard’s classic lineup alongside their signature chocolate, vanilla, and seasonal rotating flavors.
“We wanted to create something that really speaks to our local palate while honoring the Portuguese tradition that started it all,” said Maria Santos, Leonard’s head baker and granddaughter of founder Leonard Rego. “These flavors represent what summer tastes like here in Hawaii — tropical, rich, and comforting all at once.”
The Lilikoi Passion malasada features a tart-sweet passion fruit filling that balances the traditional sugary exterior, while the Coconut Haupia Cream incorporates the beloved local dessert flavor into a creamy center. The Guava Cheesecake variety combines two island favorites — pink guava and rich cheesecake — in what Santos describes as their most indulgent creation yet.
Local Ingredients, Global Recognition
Leonard’s sources its lilikoi from Waiahole Valley farms on the windward side and partners with local coconut suppliers to ensure authenticity in their haupia-inspired creation. The guava comes from Big Island orchards, maintaining the bakery’s commitment to supporting Hawaii’s agricultural community.
The timing couldn’t be better for Leonard’s expansion. The bakery has seen renewed international attention following features in food publications and social media, drawing visitors from around the world to their modest Kapahulu Avenue storefront. Lines regularly stretch down the sidewalk, especially on weekends when both locals and tourists queue up for the hot, fresh malasadas that have become synonymous with Hawaii’s culinary identity.
“Every morning we sell out of our regular flavors by noon, and weekends are absolutely crazy,” Santos said. “But that’s the beauty of it — people know they’re getting something special, something made with aloha.”
The new flavors underwent six months of testing, with Santos and her team perfecting the filling consistency and flavor balance. Local food blogger and longtime Leonard’s customer Keoni Nakamura got an early taste during the testing phase.
Summer Traditions Meet Innovation
“The lilikoi one transported me right back to my tutu’s backyard, picking passion fruit off the vine,” Nakamura said. “But the guava cheesecake — that’s next level. It’s like they took everything good about a Hawaiian summer and put it in a malasada.”
Leonard’s has carefully maintained its traditional preparation methods even as it introduces new flavors. Each malasada is still hand-rolled and fried fresh throughout the day, with fillings injected to order to ensure optimal texture and temperature. The bakery produces approximately 2,000 malasadas daily, with weekend production often exceeding 3,500 pieces.
The summer flavors will be available alongside Leonard’s regular menu, which includes their famous plain sugar malasadas, chocolate, vanilla, and monthly rotating specials. Pricing remains consistent with current offerings, with filled malasadas at $2.75 each or $15 for a half-dozen.
For many Honolulu residents, Leonard’s represents more than just a bakery — it’s a cultural touchstone that connects Portuguese heritage with Hawaiian identity. The introduction of these island-inspired flavors reflects the ongoing evolution of local cuisine, where traditional techniques meet contemporary tastes.
The summer launch coincides with Leonard’s preparation for their 75th anniversary celebration planned for 2027. Santos hinted that the success of these seasonal offerings could lead to their permanent addition to the menu, along with other innovations currently in development.
Leonard’s Bakery is located at 933 Kapahulu Avenue and is open daily from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. The new summer flavors will be available starting June 1, and given Leonard’s track record, early birds will have the best selection before daily sellouts occur.
