Liliha Bakery’s Famous Coco Puffs Come to Waikiki Beach Walk with New Sixth Location

Liliha Bakery, the 75-year-old local institution famous for its cream-filled Coco Puffs, has officially opened its sixth location at Waikiki Beach Walk, marking the beloved bakery’s first venture into Honolulu’s premier tourist district.

The new outpost, which soft-opened last week, brings the bakery’s signature pastries and local-style comfort food directly to the heart of Waikiki. Located on the makai side of Beach Walk near the Royal Hawaiian Center, the 2,400-square-foot space features the same nostalgic charm as other Liliha locations while catering to both visitors and locals working in the area.

“We’ve had tourists asking us for years when we’d open in Waikiki,” said Richard Higa, Liliha Bakery’s operations manager. “This location allows us to share our local flavors with visitors while still maintaining the authentic experience that locals have loved for decades.”

The Waikiki location serves the full Liliha menu, including the famous Coco Puffs that have drawn lines of devoted customers since the bakery’s founding in 1950. The choux pastry filled with chocolate cream and topped with Chantilly frosting remains unchanged from the original recipe, alongside other local favorites like butter rolls, malasadas, and the bakery’s hearty plate lunches.

Expanding While Staying Local

The Beach Walk opening represents a strategic expansion for the family-owned business, which has carefully grown from its original Liliha Street location to include spots in Keeaumoku, Ala Moana Center, Mililani, and Ninitz Highway. Each location has maintained the same no-frills aesthetic and focus on quality that made the original a local landmark.

Unlike many local businesses that struggle to maintain their identity when expanding into tourist areas, Liliha Bakery appears committed to preserving its authentic character. The Waikiki location features the same vintage-style display cases, Formica countertops, and handwritten menu boards that regulars know and love.

The menu pricing remains consistent with other locations, ensuring that the famous Coco Puffs still cost under $2 each — a rarity in Waikiki’s inflated dining scene. The bakery is also maintaining its early morning hours, opening at 6 a.m. to serve both hotel workers starting their shifts and early-rising visitors.

Meeting Tourist Demand

Food tourism has become increasingly important to Honolulu’s economy, with visitors seeking authentic local experiences beyond traditional resort dining. Liliha Bakery’s Coco Puffs have achieved near-mythical status among food bloggers and travel guides, often cited as a must-try local treat.

The Beach Walk location addresses a long-standing challenge for tourists trying to experience local food culture. Previously, visitors had to venture beyond Waikiki to taste the famous pastries, often requiring rental cars or rideshare trips to reach locations in residential neighborhoods.

The new spot also benefits from Waikiki Beach Walk’s steady foot traffic and proximity to major hotels like the Embassy Suites and Hilton Hawaiian Village. The outdoor shopping and dining complex draws both tourists and locals, creating an ideal environment for Liliha’s crossover appeal.

Local Impact and Future Plans

The opening creates approximately 25 new jobs in Waikiki, with positions ranging from bakers to counter staff. Liliha Bakery has historically been a strong local employer, offering stable wages and opportunities for advancement within the company.

For longtime customers, the Waikiki expansion raises questions about whether increased visibility and tourist demand might affect the neighborhood bakery feel that makes Liliha special. However, early indications suggest the company is committed to maintaining its local roots while embracing growth opportunities.

The bakery’s success in Waikiki could pave the way for additional tourist-area locations, though company representatives have not announced any immediate expansion plans beyond the current six stores.

For Honolulu residents, the new location offers another convenient spot to grab their Coco Puff fix, particularly for those working in or around Waikiki. It also represents a rare example of local business successfully entering tourist territory without compromising the authentic character that made them beloved in the first place.

The Liliha Bakery Waikiki location is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., serving the full menu of pastries, coffee, and local-style meals that have made it a Honolulu institution for three-quarters of a century.
