SONIC’s First Oahu Drive-In Opens Mid-May in Kapolei, Bringing 100+ Jobs and Carhops to the Westside
The familiar red and blue SONIC Drive-In sign will light up Kapolei Parkway for the first time this May, marking a milestone for both the Oklahoma-based chain and Oahu’s rapidly expanding Westside dining scene.
The restaurant at 5001 Kapolei Parkway is scheduled to open its stalls mid-May, bringing more than 100 jobs to the area and introducing Hawaii residents to the chain’s signature carhop service — complete with roller-skating servers delivering food directly to customers’ cars.
For Kapolei, which has transformed from sugarcane fields to a bustling second city over the past two decades, SONIC’s arrival represents another step in its evolution as a dining destination. The drive-in joins an increasingly diverse food landscape that already includes everything from local plate lunch spots to national chains like In-N-Out Burger, which opened nearby in 2022.
“We’re seeing more and more mainland chains recognize that Kapolei isn’t just a bedroom community anymore,” said Maria Santos, a longtime Kapolei resident who works at nearby Ko Olina Resort. “My kids are excited about those roller-skating servers. It’s something completely different for us out here.”
The SONIC location will operate with the chain’s classic drive-in format, featuring covered stalls where customers can park and place orders through an intercom system. The carhop service — a throwback to 1950s American dining culture — allows customers to remain in their vehicles while uniformed servers on roller skates deliver orders directly to car windows.
Local Hiring Underway
The restaurant has been actively recruiting from the local community, with hiring events held throughout April at the Kapolei location. Positions range from carhops and kitchen staff to management roles, with the company emphasizing flexible scheduling to accommodate students and part-time workers.
Restaurant manager trainee Keoni Nakamura, a recent University of Hawaii graduate, sees the job as an opportunity to gain experience in the food service industry while staying close to home. “Growing up on the Westside, we always had to drive to town for certain dining experiences,” Nakamura said. “Now we’re bringing something unique right here to our neighborhood.”
The roller-skating element has generated particular interest among local job seekers. SONIC will provide training for new carhops, including those who haven’t skated before, though the company notes that skating isn’t mandatory for all positions.
Westside Dining Evolution
SONIC’s entry into the Kapolei market reflects broader changes in the area’s commercial landscape. The Kapolei Commons shopping center, where the drive-in is located, has become a hub for both local businesses and national retailers seeking to serve the growing residential population.
The Westside’s dining scene has expanded significantly in recent years, moving beyond traditional local favorites to include diverse options that serve both residents and the millions of tourists who visit nearby Ko Olina and other attractions. The addition of SONIC’s extensive menu — featuring hot dogs, burgers, breakfast items, and the chain’s famous flavored drinks and slushes — adds another layer to the area’s food offerings.
Local food industry observers note that SONIC’s success will likely depend on how well it adapts to local tastes while maintaining its mainland appeal. The chain’s customizable drinks and ice cream treats could prove particularly popular in Hawaii’s warm climate.
The restaurant’s drive-in format also aligns with local dining habits, where takeout and casual dining remain popular options for busy families and workers.
Economic Impact
Beyond the immediate job creation, SONIC’s opening is expected to generate additional economic activity for surrounding businesses in the Kapolei Commons area. The drive-in format typically attracts customers for multiple dayparts, from breakfast through late evening snacks.
The location along Kapolei Parkway positions the restaurant to serve not only local residents but also commuters traveling between the Westside and central Oahu, potentially making it a regular stop for workers heading to and from Honolulu.
As Kapolei continues to grow — with new residential developments and commercial projects in the pipeline — SONIC’s arrival signals confidence in the area’s long-term economic prospects. The success of this first Hawaii location could pave the way for additional SONIC restaurants across the state.
For now, Westside residents are counting down to mid-May, when they can experience their first taste of SONIC’s drive-in culture without leaving their neighborhood.
