Kalihi Valley Residents Launch Free Community Fridge Network Across Five Locations

A grassroots effort in Kalihi Valley has placed five community fridges across the neighborhood, providing free fresh produce and prepared meals to anyone who needs them — no questions asked, no sign-up required.

The Kalihi Community Fridge Network, organized by a coalition of residents and supported by Kokua Kalihi Valley Comprehensive Family Services, launched last month with a single fridge outside the KKV clinic on North School Street. After that fridge was emptied and restocked three times in its first day, organizers quickly expanded to four additional locations.

“The need was so much bigger than we imagined,” said network coordinator Uilani Medeiros, a Kalihi native and mother of three. “We put one fridge out there and the community basically said, ‘More, please.'”

The fridges, painted in bright colors by local artists, are stocked daily by a network of over 60 volunteers. Food comes from donations by farms, restaurants, and grocery stores that would otherwise discard usable items. On average, the network distributes over 800 pounds of food per week.

Each fridge operates on the honor system with a simple sign: “Take what you need, leave what you can.” Medeiros said the community has respected the system, with no vandalism or misuse reported. Some residents who initially came to take food have returned as donors once their circumstances improved.

The initiative has drawn interest from neighborhoods across Oahu. Medeiros said groups in Waianae, Wahiawa, and Kailua have reached out for guidance on starting their own networks. She’s preparing a free toolkit to help them get started.
