Honolulu Marathon Announces New Sunset Start Time and Carbon-Neutral Pledge for 2026

The Honolulu Marathon Association announced sweeping changes for the 2026 race, including a shift to a 4:30 a.m. start time and a commitment to make the event fully carbon neutral — a first for any major U.S. marathon.

The earlier start, moving up 30 minutes from the traditional 5:00 a.m. gun, is designed to get runners through the most exposed sections of the course along Kalanianaole Highway before the midday heat. Race director Dr. Jim Barahal said medical incidents among back-of-pack runners have increased 18 percent over the past five years as average December temperatures have risen.

“Runner safety is non-negotiable,” Barahal said. “Moving the start time gives our slowest participants — who are often our most dedicated — an extra cushion before the heat sets in.”

The carbon-neutral pledge involves purchasing verified carbon offsets for all race-related emissions, transitioning to compostable cups and biodegradable course markers, and partnering with Hawaiian Electric to power race operations entirely with renewable energy. The marathon will also eliminate single-use plastic water bottles, replacing them with paper-based cups at aid stations.

Registration for the December 13 event opens May 1. The marathon regularly draws over 25,000 participants, including roughly 12,000 from Japan, making it one of the most internationally diverse road races in the world. Entry fees will remain unchanged at $195 for early registration.

This year marks the marathon’s 54th running. The event generates an estimated $130 million in economic impact for Hawaii annually, according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
