Sonic Drive-In Opens Oahu’s First Location in Kapolei, Complete With Roller-Skating Carhops

The unmistakable sound of roller skates gliding across pavement has officially arrived on Oahu. Sonic Drive-In opened its first island location May 16 at 5001 Kapolei Parkway, bringing the retro American drive-in experience — complete with roller-skating carhops — to West Oahu residents who’ve spent decades watching Sonic commercials without being able to visit one.

The Kapolei location marks a significant expansion for the Oklahoma-based chain, which has built its reputation on nostalgic Americana and made-to-order menu items served by skating servers. For many local residents, it’s the end of a long wait to experience what they’d only seen advertised on television.

“Growing up here, we’d always see those Sonic commercials and wonder what it was like,” said Kapolei resident Maria Santos, who brought her family for opening day. “My kids kept asking me about the skating waitresses, so this is pretty exciting for all of us.”

The 3,200-square-foot restaurant features 24 drive-in stalls with classic canopy coverage, allowing customers to order from their cars via the iconic intercom system. While not all carhops will be on skates at all times, the location promises to maintain Sonic’s signature roller-skating service during peak hours and special events.

Oahu-Exclusive Menu Items

Beyond the novelty of carhop service, Sonic has created Hawaii-specific menu additions for the Kapolei location. The standout item is the Teriyaki Smasher burger, featuring a smashed beef patty with teriyaki sauce, grilled onions, and pickles — a nod to local flavor preferences that dominate the island’s burger scene.

The location also serves Sonic’s full menu of burgers, hot dogs, chicken items, and the chain’s famous slushies and shakes. With more than 40 drink combinations available, the beverage program alone represents a significant addition to Kapolei’s dining landscape.

Local franchisee operations began hiring months ahead of opening, with positions ranging from carhops to kitchen staff. The restaurant employs approximately 40 people, with many positions going to local residents seeking flexible work opportunities in the growing Kapolei area.

Strategic West Side Location

The Kapolei Parkway location positions Sonic strategically in one of Oahu’s fastest-growing communities. West Oahu has seen significant residential and commercial development over the past decade, with Kapolei serving as a hub for families priced out of more central Honolulu neighborhoods.

The drive-in concept aligns well with suburban Kapolei’s car-dependent lifestyle, offering a dining experience that doesn’t require customers to leave their vehicles. This proves particularly appealing to families with young children or anyone seeking convenient meal options during busy weekdays.

Sonic’s arrival also represents continued mainland chain expansion into Hawaii’s market, following recent additions like Dutch Bros Coffee and various fast-casual concepts that have found success adapting to local tastes and preferences.

Community Response and Cultural Impact

Opening day drew steady crowds throughout the weekend, with many customers sharing photos and videos of the roller-skating carhops on social media. The novelty factor has generated considerable local buzz, particularly among residents who relocated from mainland areas where Sonic locations are common.

The drive-in experience offers something distinctly different from Hawaii’s existing fast-food landscape, which tends toward either traditional fast-food chains or local-style plate lunch establishments. Sonic’s made-to-order approach and car-side service creates a middle ground that appeals to both convenience seekers and experience-oriented diners.

For many local families, the opening represents an opportunity to share mainland American culture with keiki who may have never experienced a traditional drive-in restaurant. The roller-skating element particularly resonates with parents looking to introduce children to retro entertainment experiences.

The Kapolei Sonic operates daily from 6 a.m. to midnight, positioning itself as both a breakfast destination and late-night option for West Oahu residents. As the location settles into regular operations, its success could influence whether additional Sonic locations appear elsewhere on the island, potentially bringing the skating carhop experience to other Oahu communities hungry for this slice of Americana.
