SONIC Is Finally Coming to Oahu — Its First Drive-In Opens in Kapolei This Month
After years of speculation and wishful thinking from local residents, SONIC Drive-In is finally cruising into Oahu with its first location set to open this month in Kapolei.
The Oklahoma-based chain announced that its inaugural Hawaii outpost will begin serving its signature burgers, hot dogs, and cherry limeades at 91-5431 Kapolei Parkway, just off the H-1 freeway near the Ka Makana Ali’i shopping center. The grand opening is scheduled for May 15, marking a significant milestone for West Oahu’s rapidly expanding dining scene.
“We’ve been hearing from Hawaii residents for years asking when SONIC would arrive,” said franchise owner Marcus Kim, a longtime Kapolei resident who secured the development rights for the location. “The timing finally aligned with our expansion goals and the incredible growth we’re seeing in West Oahu.”
The 2,400-square-foot restaurant will feature SONIC’s classic drive-in setup with 24 covered stalls where customers can order via intercom and have meals delivered by roller-skating carhops. The location will also include a drive-through lane and limited indoor seating — a departure from traditional mainland SONIC locations but adapted for Hawaii’s year-round outdoor dining culture.
Long-Awaited West Side Addition
The arrival comes as Kapolei continues its transformation into what many call Oahu’s “second city.” The area has seen explosive residential and commercial development over the past decade, with new shopping centers, restaurants, and entertainment venues catering to the growing population of young families and professionals.
“This is exactly what our community has been asking for,” said Kapolei Neighborhood Board member Jennifer Nakamura. “We have families here who remember SONIC from the mainland, and now their keiki get to experience it without driving all the way to town.”
SONIC’s menu will feature mainland favorites alongside Hawaii-inspired additions, including a haupia shake and a teriyaki burger that incorporates local flavors. The restaurant plans to source ingredients locally when possible, including beef from Big Island ranches and produce from Oahu farms.
The chain’s arrival also represents a shift in fast-casual dining options for West Oahu residents, who have historically had fewer choices compared to urban Honolulu. Recent years have brought chains like In-N-Out Burger to the area, creating a competitive landscape that benefits local consumers.
Economic Impact and Employment
The new location is expected to create approximately 40 jobs, from carhops to kitchen staff to management positions. Kim emphasized the company’s commitment to hiring locally and providing competitive wages in line with Hawaii’s cost of living.
“We’re not just bringing a restaurant to Kapolei — we’re investing in the community,” Kim said. “Our goal is to become a gathering place where families can create memories.”
The restaurant industry has faced significant challenges in Hawaii, from supply chain disruptions to labor shortages. However, West Oahu’s growing population base and limited dining options have made it an attractive market for national chains looking to establish a foothold in the islands.
Local food bloggers and social media influencers have already begun generating buzz around the opening, with some organizing informal “countdown” events and sharing memories of SONIC experiences from the mainland.
Tourism and Local Appeal
While SONIC’s primary focus will be serving local residents, the location’s proximity to Ko Olina resorts and other West Side attractions positions it to capture tourist traffic as well. The drive-in concept offers a uniquely American dining experience that could appeal to visitors seeking authentic mainland culture.
The restaurant’s late hours — planned until 11 p.m. on weekends — also fill a gap in West Oahu’s dining scene, where options for evening meals have been limited compared to urban Honolulu.
Industry analysts suggest SONIC’s success could pave the way for additional locations across the state, with Maui and the Big Island potentially next in line for expansion.
For now, West Oahu residents are simply excited about the prospect of enjoying slushies and tater tots without a long drive to town. The May 15 opening will include special promotions and giveaways, with Kim promising that the first 100 customers will receive SONIC merchandise and free drinks for a year.
As Kapolei continues evolving into a major population center, SONIC’s arrival signals confidence in the area’s economic future and provides yet another reason for families to call West Oahu home.
